From the plains around Marrakech the route heads southwards to cross the High Atlas mountains by the spectacular Tizi n Ticha pass. You descend a winding road through rocky red foothills to the ancient Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been the setting for many films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. We continue to the town of Ouarzazate where we spend the night. The lunch stop is at the scenic Dades Gorge before traveling towards the Jebel Sahro mountains and the first sighting of the Sahara Desert. Eventually you reach the small town of Merzouga at the foot of Erg Chebbi, one of the largest dunes in Morocco. You should arrive at your auberge in time to watch the setting sun and the beautiful colour changes as night descends.

A long day, and one which could be split into two shorter days if you have time.
