Berlin History Tour

A study of the city both Pre-War and Cold War, visiting Wannsee, the Berlin Wall and the Topography of Terror museum. The tour can also include the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen, and the Palaces of Potsdam where the post war conference took place.

  • Day 1

    Fly to Berlin - German Resistance Centre & East Side Gallery

    On arrival you will be met by a private coach and transfer into the city centre and your accommodation. After time for lunch you visit the German Resistance Memorial which records the attempt by Claus von Stauffenberg to assassinate Hitler at the Wolf’s Lair in 1944. You can see Stauffenberg’s actual office and also the courtyard where he and his fellow conspirators were executed by firing squad. In the afternoon you visit the famous East Side Gallery, a long, preserved section of Berlin Wall located by the River Spree which features the works of many contemporary street artists.

  • Day 2

    Stasi Museum & Berlin Walking Tour

    This morning you head to East Berlin and visit the Stasi Museum located in the former headquarters of the East German ‘Stasi’ - the secret police. As recently as 1989, this was a greatly feared building in which the East German state directed espionage against its own people, as well as West Berliners and other Germans. In the afternoon you do a Berlin walking tour which explores many of the key historical sites spanning both the Nazi period and Cold War era including Checkpoint Charlie, Goering’s Luftwaffe headquarters and the site of Hitler’s Fuhrer Bunker. You then continue to the Holocaust Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. At the famous Brandenburg Gate, which from 1961 until 1989 marked the division between East and West Berlin, you can see where President Kennedy, and later Ronald Reagan were confronted with the ‘Iron Curtain’. Your tour ends at the Reichstag Building.

  • Day 3

    Berlin TV Tower, German Historical Museum & Reichstag

    First thing in the morning you take a trip to the top of the Berlin TV Tower for a spectacular view of the city. Back at street level in Alexanderplatz, you walk to the Berliner Dom, the city’s main Cathedral adjacent to the open space of the Lustgarten. The Cathedral still bears the scars of war with numerous pock marks from bullets and shrapnel from the Battle of Berlin in April 1945. Adjacent to this you visit the German Historical Museum which documents German history throughout the ages. There will be a guided tour which will focus on the Weimar Republic. In the afternoon you visit the Reichstag Building, the seat of the German Parliament, to see the spectacular dome which was designed by the British architect Norman Foster. The tour also allows you to access the roof of the Reichstag for views across the city.

  • Day 4

    Berlin Wall Memorial & Wannsee Villa

    This morning you visit the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse. You can see where the Wall divided the city and the tunnels that were dug from both sides. You then continue to the beautiful lake of Wannsee and the Wannsee Villa which was the scene of the Final Solution Conference attended by Heidrich, Eichmann and other leading Nazis to settle the so-called Jewish Question in Europe. There is a detailed exhibition which charts the rise of the Nazis and you can stand in the room where the short conference took place and see the original documents. In the afternoon you transfer to the airport for the homeward flight
