  • Day 1

    Flight to Bilbao

Today you fly to Bilbao where on arrival you are met by a private coach and transfer to the pretty town of Santillana del Mar for hotel check in and dinner.

  • Day 2

El Soplao Caves, Comillas & El Capricho

This morning you visit the famous El Soplao Caves, located in the Sierra de Arnero. You do the normal guided tour which includes the train into the cave; the tour lasts approximately an hour. After the tour you travel to the nearby town of Comillas, one of Cantabria’s most iconic places and one of its most interesting from an architectural point of view. It has some of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in the region including the Sobrellano Palace Chapel and of course the unique El Capricho by Gaudi. This was the first house he ever built and one of only three outside of Barcelona.

  • Day 3

Today you spend time in Santander for shopping, sightseeing and lunch. Start the day with a leisurely stroll along the seafront Paseo de Pareda promenade and Jardines de Pareda gardens. In the city centre, walk through the Plaza Porticada and visit the majestic Cathedral de la Asuncion. Later in the afternoon you can visit the beautiful Magdalena Peninsular where there are nature walks and also miles of beautiful sandy beaches. You return to Santillana in the early evening for dinner at your hotel.

  • Day 4

This morning you travel to Bilbao and visit the new and modernist Guggenheim Museum, a work of art in its own right and designed by the architect Frank Gehry, who was also the creator of the famous Fish in Barcelona. The Guggenheim is one of the largest museums in Spain and contains a tremendous range of contemporary Spanish art including Picasso and Velasquez. International artists are also represented, including Britain’s Francis Bacon. In Bilbao you have time to stroll through the Arenal gardens, the gateway to the historic centre, the Casco Viejo, which the people of Bilbao affectionately call the Seven Streets. After lunch transfer to the airport for your return flight.
