  • Day 2

    Exploring Historic Granada

This morning you will meet your guide at the hotel, with your guide you will explore the old city. You head up to the Albayzin, the old Moorish quarter. This is the most interesting neighborhood in Granada, consisting of narrow winding alleys and hidden squares where the medieval street layout has been preserved. Walking around between the picturesque white houses covered in flowers, you have fleeting views of the Alhambra on the hill. One of the highlights is the Alcaiceria, the Moorish Silk Market with shops selling silver, spices and silk. The narrow lanes with their little shops are rather touristy but fun to explore. You can conclude in the Plaza de Bib-Rambla, the centre of Moorish Granada and a good place to stop for coffee.

Today you will enjoy a traditional Tapas lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch you have a free time for further sightseeing, shopping and exploration of Granada, you may wish to explore the magnificent renaissance cathedral, built in the baroque style in the early sixteenth century. The cathedral is very close to your hotel.

After dinner you can enjoy a stroll along the Paseo de los Tristes, a beautiful promenade lined with historic buildings and in the shadow of the Alhambra which is lit up spectacularly at night.

There is also an outdoor museum with lots of green areas which include the Obersvation Tower and the Tropical Butterfly House.

This afternoon you make the steep 20-minute walk up hill to the Alhambra, the most famous site in Granada. The Alhambra is a beautifully preserved example of Moorish architecture with exquisitely maintained gardens. Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was a fortress, a palace and a medina all in one. The name comes from the Arabic, meaning Red Castle. The Alhambra has numerous rooms to explore, and several different courtyards with pools and running water. One of the most stunning is the Hall of Lions. Built in the fourteenth century, the striking courtyard displays both Moorish and Christian influences. The highlights of the visit are the Nasrid Palaces which are located inside the Alhambra complex. These Moorish gems were for centuries the residences of the rulers of Granada.
