American History & Politics

The Federal Capital has played a pivotal role in America’s history.  The Founding Fathers signed the 1776 Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and with the end of the Revolutionary War, by 1790 Washington was the capital of the new nation.

Washington was key stage again during the Civil War when Confederate armies under Lee clashed with Union forces at Manassas, just outside the city. With the conclusion of the War, it was again in Washington where another key event in American history took place with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre.
